### Summary
As an Administrative Support Assistant (ASA) in Surgery Service, the incumbent's primary function is to provide day-to-day support to the overall operation of the Surgery Service line. The ASA will perform a broad range of administrative functions designed to coordinate and facilitate the overall operation of the service. The ASA assists the Service Line Manager and the Administrative Officer (AO) with special assignments: i.e. Network and local program assessments; reviewing and updating protocols, directives, standard operating procedures, etc., and may also serve on special task force committees.

### Responsibilities
Schedules monthly Staff and Operative and Invasive Procedures meetings, aggregates data, prepares agendas, composes minutes, extracts reportable data and provides to appropriate governing committees..
Provides workload statistics such as physician, clinic and surgical workload, patient visits and consult tracking.
Serves as Fund Control Point (FCP) clerk for Surgery Service and is responsible for inputting requests and monitoring all FCP activities.
Incumbent provides AO with weekly Running Balance reports.
Responsible for reviewing and maintaining manuals, formulating drafts of Medical Center Memorandums (MCMs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and working with service line management to insure proper administrative and clinical protocol guidelines are followed.Administrative Support.
Incumbent is responsible for administrative functions and assignments made by the Administrative Officer and Service Line Manager.
Develops and maintains organizational and functional charts for the service line.Incumbent monitors patient scheduling and ensuring timeliness and accuracy of appointments scheduled for Surgery, Podiatry and Urology
Incumbent maintains Surgery Service's Equipment Inventory List (EIL) and submits equipment Turn-in 2237s for outdated/broken equipment or equipment being moved to another EIL.
Completes the annual Equipment Inventory for all non-expendable Surgery Service equipment and also submits appropriate requests in the acquisition, repair and disposal of equipment. Incumbent initiates Reports of Survey to Police and Security.
Prepares travel and education requests for physicians and staff in Surgery Service.

### Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/29/2018.
**Time-In-Grade Requirement**: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. **Note:**Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience:
* **Specialized Experience:** You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization for the GS-06. You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization for the GS-7 Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: performing and coordinating a variety of administrative duties such as interacting with office staff and visitors to answer questions and exchange information; maintaining a filing system; independently coordinating travel arrangements and scheduling meetings using automated systems; procuring office supplies and/or equipment; utilizing a web-based time and attendance system to perform timekeeping functions, utilizing fund control points and preparing and reviewing correspondence for accurate information and grammar.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
**Note**: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
**Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary and is performed in a clinic responsible for treating patients with a wide variety of medical problems. Normal safety precautions and practices are required for working a health care environment. This position requires emotional ability to deal effectively with multi-tasking and high volume of patient flow. **Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave**: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
